In the emotionally charged short film 'Leave Behind', director Isabel Bernal tackles the universal dilemma of knowing when it's time to bid farewell to something that once brought immense joy. The narrative unfolds with a poignant exploration of the protagonist's internal struggle, raising thought-provoking questions about the nature of happiness and the inevitability of change.

The story revolves around a woman and a man having a talk in a room where the sun struggles to get inside because to the curtains. Their dialogue is mostly emotional, with the woman constantly breaking a tear for no apparent reason. As the film progresses, we gradually realise that the comfort derived from the past may be hiding some personal grief.

The film masterfully employs visual metaphors and a subtle yet evocative soundtrack to convey the emotional complexity of the woman's journey. Each frame is meticulously crafted to reflect the bittersweet beauty of nostalgia and the daunting prospect of embracing the unknown as the viewer starts to understand where the story is going. The central theme invites the audience to reflect on their lives, prompting introspection about the moments or aspects that might be lost forever. The script is skillfully written, allowing the characters to grapple with their emotions in a genuine and relatable way. On top of that, the dialogue is thought-provoking, with a delicate balance of melancholy and hope that unveils the surprise.

Isabel Bernal is both the director of the short film and the main character, and she delivers a powerful performance, skillfully portraying the internal conflict with authenticity and vulnerability. Both actors' nuanced expressions and subtle gestures effectively communicate her character's profound emotional journey as she tackles the pain.

'Leave Behind' reminds us that life is a constant ebb and flow, and the key to true happiness may lie in the willingness to let go when the time is right. It is a poignant exploration of the delicate balance between holding onto cherished memories and embracing present and future possibilities.
